SOUTH AFRICA MARKETS
South Africa's rand strengthened on Monday, resuming a
recent rally that has pushed it to pre-pandemic levels, with
investors lured back into risk assets by progress in
COVID-19 vaccines and hopes of further stimulus in the
United States. BANKS
Nigerian banks will on Friday commence dollar payout for
diaspora inflows and close naira remittance accounts after
the regulator eased money transfer rules to try to boost
forex liquidity in the country, the central bank said on
Thursday. MARKETS
The Kenyan shilling KES= traded stable on Monday but was
seen coming under some pressure on the back of an expected
rise in appetite for hard currency from firms looking to
settle year-end obligations, traders said. CONFLICT
Ethiopia's government denied on Monday that northern forces
whom its troops have fought for a month would be able to
mount a guerrilla insurgency, while diplomats said a United

Ghanaians voted on Monday in what is expected to be a close

Ivory Coast cocoa grinders processed 98,000 tonnes of beans
by the end of November, up from 96,000 tonnes over the same
period last season, data from exporters' association GEPEX
showed on Monday. POLITICS/RELIGION
Eritrea has released 28 members of the Jehovah's Witnesses
group after they served prison terms of up to 26 years, the
Christian denomination said in a statement seen by Reuters

Allies of former Congolese leader Joseph Kabila on Monday
rejected President Felix Tshisekedi's move to end his
governing coalition with them, setting up a stark test of

Workers at Resolute Mining's RSG.AX Syama gold mine in
Mali launched a five-day strike on Monday in a dispute over
policy on COVID-19, although some production has continued,

output by 35% to 3.8 million tonnes a year in 2021 after
completion of a new open-cast mine under construction in the
