BUA says it is giving Nigeria 1 mln doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine

ABUJA, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Conglomerate BUA Group has paid for
1 million doses of the AstraZeneca (NASDAQ:AZN) COVID-19 vaccine to be sent
to Nigeria, the company said in a statement on Monday.
Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, said earlier on
Monday that it would continue with the AstraZeneca vaccine
despite evidence that it was minimally effective against mild
cases of the South African COVID-19 strain, as authorities had
yet to detect that strain in its population. BUA, a food and infrastructure conglomerate, said its
purchase of the doses, at full price, was facilitated by
Afreximbank with the help of Nigeria's Central Bank.
"We expect the vaccines to be delivered within the next 14
days and hope priority will be given to our frontline workers
who have committed their lives to managing the pandemic," BUA
founder Abdul Samad Rabiu said in the statement.
Faisal Shuaib, the head of Nigeria's primary healthcare
agency, said he was unaware of the donation.
Rabiu said BUA would purchase 5 million doses for Nigeria as
soon as they become available through this same arrangement.
