GLOBAL MARKETS
Asian stocks drifted on Wednesday as Sino-U.S. trade talks
showed little progress ahead of a weekend deadline for the
imposition of additional U.S. tariffs, and the pound wobbled
as opinion polls pointed to a tight British election on

WORLD OIL PRICES
Oil prices fell on Wednesday after industry data showed an
unexpected build in crude inventory in the United States and
as investors waited for news on whether a fresh round of
U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods would take effect on

SOUTH AFRICA MARKETS
South Africa's rand tumbled to a two-week low on Tuesday,
along with bonds and stocks, as a deepening power crisis and
the spreading impact on business operations rattled investor
sentiment. MARKETS
The Kenyan shilling KES= was firm against the dollar on
Tuesday supported by inflows from diaspora remittances and
offshore investors buying stocks, traders said. MARKETS
Nigerian stocks fell to their lowest level in a month on
Tuesday after shedding 1.11% as shares of the two most
capitalised companies Dangote Cement DANGCEM.LG and MTN

Global consumers purchasing teak may be fuelling conflict in
South Sudan, a research group said on Tuesday, warning that
armed groups are benefiting from an unregulated logging
trade worth tens of millions of dollars. MINING
Madagascar plans to increase its royalties on nickel,
cobalt, precious metals, and gemstones to 4% from 2% at
present, a draft mining law showed on Tuesday, the latest
African country to push for greater government revenue from
mining activities. SECURITY
Islamist Al Shabaab gunmen attacked a hotel in Somalia's
capital near the presidential residence on Tuesday and
police said they killed two attackers and rescued dozens of
people from inside. POLITICS
Ethiopia's federal police were deployed to universities
across the country on Tuesday, the government said, as
authorities sought to calm ethnic tensions which have
claimed the lives of seven students in the past three
